How We Help Hair and Beauty Salons

Seamless integration of booking systems (Fresha, Treatwell) with accounting
Compliant payroll, commission structures, and tronc schemes for tips
Clear guidance on chair rental tax rules and self-employed stylist status
Proactive VAT threshold monitoring and Flat Rate Scheme advice

Renting a chair to a self-employed stylist can be tax-efficient, but HMRC scrutinises these arrangements closely. The stylist must be genuinely self-employed, managing their own bookings, clients, and insurance. If HMRC deems them employees, the salon faces heavy tax liabilities. We help structure compliant agreements.

Tips paid in cash directly to staff do not involve the employer and are the employee’s responsibility for tax. However, tips paid by card or app and distributed by the salon must go through payroll. We set up compliant ‘tronc’ systems to distribute card tips tax-efficiently.

The Flat Rate Scheme allows eligible small businesses to pay a fixed percentage of their turnover as VAT, simplifying record-keeping. However, because salons have low standard-rated expenses compared to their sales, the Flat Rate Scheme is not always the cheapest option. We perform detailed calculations to find your best VAT setup.

You can claim all business-related expenses, including salon rent, utilities, professional insurance, hair products and colors, styling equipment, staff uniforms, marketing, and training courses. We make sure you claim every allowable expense to keep your tax bill as low as possible.

We integrate your booking and till software (like Fresha or Phorest) directly with cloud accounting tools. This automatically imports and categorises daily sales, card machine payouts, and cash deposits, reducing manual bookkeeping and eliminating reconciliation errors.
